Emergent Approaches For Open Science
INFORMATION
Due to the health crisis related to the covid-19, the different deadlines of the abstract submission process have been modified. The deadline for abstract submission has been extended to 30 June 2020. The date of the event itself remains unchanged. Thank you for your understanding.
The Swiss Research Data Day, the 3rd edition of this DLCM event, will take place in Switzerland, at the Geneva School of Business Administration (HEG/HES-SO), October 22, 2020. It is organized by the Data Life-Cycle Management (DLCM) Project, led by the University of Geneva (UNIGE) and HEG/HES-SO in collaboration with the Zürich Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschafts (ZHAW), and mandated by swissuniversities.
This call is to kindly invite you to contribute to our coming event entitled Swiss Research Data Day 2020: Emergent approaches for Open Science. It will offer a discussion space to exchange on major challenging technologies and approaches that characterize the Research Data Management (RDM) practices from the institutional point of view as well as researcher perspective.
Research data need more than just basic management processes: RDM asks for a multidisciplinary governance approach to ensure the quality of research data, their visibility, operability, interoperability and reuse. These skills involve methodological, ethical, legal, technical and technological know-how for mastering RDM in a digital environment. Researchers face a growing number of issues and challenges.
Among others, they are increasingly expecting to know:
- What use they may do from Artificial Intelligence to take as many advantages as possible on Automated Data Processing?
- How to ensure their data use are compliant with the law and/or ethics?
- Where to find Open Data and/or how to open their own data?
- How to appraise the quality of the data they do collect and/or reuse?
- How to correctly write their Data Management Plans (DMP)?
- Where to find the best training methods?
Valuable answers will be provided during the Swiss Research Data Day 2020 to address those questions. This year, our event will particularly focus on emergent approaches to RDM. It will offer a relevant discussion on new developments, initiatives, projects, practices, standards and technologies in RDM applied in different fields.

Papers
Presentation of an advanced experience and innovative projects on specific dimension of Research Data solutions / good practices / challenges. It should be summarized in a short abstract (250 words). The presentation duration is set to 20 minutes followed by 5-minutes question session.
By December, 31s, 2020, a full article (maximum 8 single spaced pages, about 4000 words, excluding references and appendices) is required and will be published in an e-book.
Lightning Talks
Brief presentation outlining an ongoing project, an innovative idea, or a relevant experience to be shared and debated with the scientific community. It should be summarized in a short abstract (150 words). The presentation duration is set to 10 minutes and thus needs to be well structured to respect the allocated time.
By December, 31s, 2020, a short article (maximum 2 single spaced pages, about 1000 words, excluding references and appendices) can be submitted and will be published in an e-book.
Demonstrations
Concrete illustration of Research Data processing or Long Term Preservation technologies, standards, tools, systems and models which have recently been developed, adopted, or experienced. The presentation can be a showcase of the functionalities of some specific tools, softwares, etc. The details of the demonstration, including any technical aspects and requirements are to be summarized in a short abstract (250 words). The presentation duration is set to 20 minutes, followed by a 5-minutes question session.
By December, 31s, 2020, a short article (maximum 5 single spaced pages, about 2500 words, excluding references and appendices) can be submitted and upon acceptance will be published in an e-book.
Workshops
Animation of a workshop. Please provide a short abstract (500 words) on the chosen theme, including all details of the workshop session and technical and material needs. The workshop duration can take one or two sessions of 1h30.
